You should confirm and book your surgery at least four weeks prior to your chosen date.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\tDO I NEED TO GET TESTED BEFORE THE SURGERY?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tExpand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t

Before surgery, you will have an appointment with the anesthesiologist, who will run certain tests known as pre-anesthesia. This pre-anesthesia includes a detailed medical history elaborated by the anesthesiologist, blood work, and an electrocardiogram (ECG), to ensure you have the necessary health conditions to undergo the surgery. During the consultation you must inform the anesthesiologist if you take any medication regularly, since some medicines may interfere with the anesthetic drugs.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\tWHAT TYPE OF ANESTHESIA WILL BE USED?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tExpand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t

The type of anesthesia depends on the treatment. We might use general anesthesia, assisted local anesthesia with sedation, or local anesthesia for minor surgeries.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\tWHY DO I HAVE TO FAST BEFORE A SURGERY UNDER GENERAL ANESTHESIA?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tExpand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t

Anesthesia alters certain normal reflexes or bodily defense mechanisms. Therefore, it is necessary to undergo surgery on an empty stomach, in order to prevent the food from returning to your mouth and entering your airways. The anesthesiologist will tell you how long you should fast and what you are allowed to take (for example, some medication with a sip of water). In general, you cannot eat or drink anything for 8 hours before surgery, if general anesthesia or sedation is required.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\tSHOULD I STOP TAKING ANY MEDICATION BEFORE MY SURGERY?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tExpand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t

If you take any medication you should continue to take it even on the day of your surgery. However, if you take aspirin or any of its derivatives you should stop taking it 14 days before the surgery to reduce the risk of bleeding. Yes. Although any type of anesthesia may involve risks, in healthy people this risk is very low. It is important to discontinue the use of aspirin or any medication containing acetylsalicylic acid or any derivatives two weeks before the surgery. You should also suspend any anti-inflammatory medication. Once you are unconscious the anesthesiologist begins the most delicate part of their job, monitoring your vital signs and treating any changes in your physical state that could arise during the surgery. Based on their knowledge and experience and by using the most sophisticated electronic monitoring systems, they will administer specific medication. Some of these drugs are necessary to keep your state of unconsciousness during the surgery, and others to regulate the functioning of your vital organs (mainly your heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, and kidney and brain functions). Thus, the anesthesiologist can treat any medical problem that could arise during the procedure. Once the surgery is over, the anesthetic medication is removed and its effects are reversed. Although the anesthetic drugs used today are very safe and precise, with very few side effects, in certain cases some secondary effects may appear such as nausea and vomiting. However, despite all this, some patients may experience some discomfort after their surgery. Once you have been discharged from the hospital, you can shower, ensuring you do not wet the operated area. Five days after your operation you can shower completely, although taking a bath should be strictly avoided.<\/p>\n
